Alaska Grizzlies Hockey provides a positive atmosphere for all student-athletes to be given the platform to demonstrate physical fitness, hockey skill growth, and the development of life skills. We build character in our athletes through competition in the game of hockey and instill in them core values which are integral to life’s successes.

The Alaska Grizzlies 10UA team and Head Coach Jason Huffaker features several Ice Puppies and Jr Grizzlies graduates on this year’s installment. In our third year of the Grizzlies organization fielding teams at the A level, this year’s team continues the new tradition of using A level teams to focus on skill development. Skaters continue skill acquisition through the introduction of team concepts in preparation for the next level at the AA level.

Coach Huffaker begins his 6th year coaching youth hockey in Fairbanks serving as Head Coach or Assistant Coach on 14 different teams over that span. The opportunity to grow and learn from different coaches over the last half decade has given Jason a unique development path that has allowed him to quickly become one the city’s premiere bench bosses. Now a Level 4 coaching certificate holder, Coach Huffaker uses fundamentals as the basis of his coaching philosophy and drags that same mantra with him off the ice. A legendary dryland coach, Jason uses that foundation off the ice to instill in his athletes the important of taking care of your body in regards to peak performance standards on the ice. A member of local 375 and the Ibew 1547 – Huffaker has owned a business,  built his house, and been a sponsored skate boarder. Born and raised in Fairbanks, Jason is the epitome of Alaska and uses that foundation to prep his athletes for the big lights and big dreams that start at the 10U level. (CEP# 453104 LVL 4)

SAMUEL SANDERS, Assistant Coach

A natural athlete growing up in Alaska, Coach Sanders has played soccer, basketball, baseball, wrestling, and most recently hockey. It was in his late 20’s that Sam started playing hockey when his father in-law, who had played hockey his whole life, talked him in to it. After waiting patiently for his son to be old enough to embark on the Ice Puppies program, he joined the Ice Puppies himself and decided to help out on the ice as much as he could. Now having helped coach 6u and 8u, Coach Sanders moves up to the 10u level. Off the ice, Sam works as a paramedic and uses that background to keep an eye on the kids and watch out for injuries and medical concerns. (CEP# 504157 LVL 1)

TIMOTHY COTTON, Assistant Coach

Growing up and attending high school on the gulf coast of Mississippi, Coach Cotton’s journey to ice hockey took a short detour via roller hockey. Ice wasn’t readily available, so playing roller hockey league started Tim’s life long love of the sport of hockey. Military veteran, after spending 5 years in the Marine Corps working on radar, the military eventually bought Coach Cotton to Fairbanks working for the FAA. Having coached both of his boys’ hockey teams in either Head or Assistant Coach positions for the last four season, the Goalie coach has a Bronze Level goalie certification. (CEP# 479931 LVL 3)

The development program for the Alaska Grizzlies competitive teams, the 10UA program focuses heavily on skater skill acquisition while introducing team concepts in preparation for the next level. Unlike the intense travel schedule of the AA program, the development team will play almost it’s full schedule of games locally or part of tournaments and festivals within the state of Alaska. This season will help the development of players and follow the recommended USA Hockey ADM model with a few Grizzlies enhancements. This team is designed for players who are motivated to grow and develop as athletes both on and off the ice.
