Alaska Grizzlies Hockey provides a positive atmosphere for all student-athletes to be given the platform to demonstrate physical fitness, hockey skill growth, and the development of life skills. We build character in our athletes through competition in the game of hockey and instill in them core values which are integral to life’s successes.

Alaska Grizzlies Hockey is proud to present this year’s 10UAA Major travel hockey team – the only Major team in Fairbanks, AK – lead by UAF Hockey alum Dirk Menard. The team, comprised of athletes in the 2010 & 2011 birth years, is poised to have a breakthrough year with several returning second year players and a plethora or new skaters graduating from the 8U age classification. The sky is the limit for this next group of young athletes.

DIRK MENARD, Head Coach

UAF Hockey alumni Dirk Menard has been coaching youth athletes in Fairbanks for the better part of the last decade. A pillar of the community and the Fairbanks hockey family (local dentistry Nanook Dental is owned and operated by Menard), Dirk started giving back to the sport he loves around the 2010 season. Officially signing up and starting his trek through the USA Hockey certificate system in 2013, Dirk now is a Level 4 certified hockey coach through USA Hockey and has traveled around the state and continuous US leading teams of all ages into battle against out of state competition. Menard and his bride have called Fairbanks home for the past 20 plus years and have two athletes – Charlie and Frederick – growing up in the game of hockey. (CEP# 420048 LVL 4)

DOMINIC LOZANO, Assistant Coach

Coach Lozano played his formative hockey in Eagle River skating for the area competitive hockey program up to and through the Midget level. Eventually making his way to Fairbanks and starting a family, Dominic has coached here locally at several age groups to include West Valley High School at the varsity level for the Wolfpack. Officially starting his USA Hockey coaching career for the 2011-12 season, Coach Lozano is currently a Level 3 certified coach. Outside of the ice, Dominic is a local firefighter by profession and uses that background to base his coaching philosophy around teamwork, commitment, and accountability. (CEP# 395668 LVL 3)

LUKE BONNEWELL, Assistant Coach

Rising coaching star Luke Bonnewell skated at the Division II level as a goaltender in MI. An integral part of the hockey family here in Fairbanks, you might see Luke more often than you’d think at the UAF Patty Center as he serves as the facility manager. Positive and upbeat, Coach Bonnewell uses his unique insight of college level athletics to prepare his athletes for the next stage through a strategic coaching curriculum with attention on skillset and the tools to succeed – mentally and physically. A newlywed off the ice, you’ll always find a smile on the happy go lucky Coach who pours into area youth in the sport of hockey. (CEP# 489885 LVL 2)

“I continue to be amazed at the coaching talent the Arctic Lions organization has has the luxury of offering at all levels – especially at the younger ages. We have former collage athletes giving back to the game they love in the community they work and call home. We are so blessed as an origination and as a hockey family in Fairbanks, AK.  — Jason Witt
